During a recent protest at the Lagos office of the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), representatives of the associations underscored the economic ramifications of the proposed ban. They urged the Federal Government to intervene and reconsider the decision, emphasizing the adverse effects on the livelihoods of half a million Nigerians.

The protestors highlighted the possibility of 500,000 breadwinners losing their jobs, exacerbating the already saturated Nigerian labor market. The associations expressed concern that the policy could lead to the closure of industries responsible for manufacturing these products, further straining the country’s economy.

Emmanuel Idogien, Vice Chairman of NUFBTE, Lagos Council, voiced his apprehensions during the protest, stating, “Most of our jobs are at stake. Many companies will fold up, especially those local industries that serve as raw materials to the producers.”

The associations defended their members’ track record of being law-abiding and socially responsible citizens, citing substantial tax contributions that have positively impacted economic growth. They emphasized ongoing advocacy efforts to educate the public on the dangers of excessive consumption and underage drinking.

In their plea to NAFDAC and the Federal Government, the associations called for a reconsideration of the outright ban. Instead, they proposed the implementation of regulations on the products and increased public enlightenment. They cautioned against the potential rise of counterfeiters and illicit alcohol production, warning of associated health risks if the ban persists.
