According to Audu’s report, the NYSC’s portal initially flagged his first registration attempt with his previous details. However, the system accepted his registration when he utilized a different email address and phone number. Megwa acknowledged the absence of a digital tool to identify multiple registration attempts but assured that the NYSC was actively working to prevent such incidents in the future.
Megwa emphasized that the undercover reporter’s success was driven by a specific agenda and stated, “It is not that we don’t have checks and balances in place to detect possible breaches of the system.” He highlighted that the system rejected the initial registration because the reporter had previously served in the scheme. The subsequent successful registration was attributed to the reporter’s change in email and phone number.
The NYSC spokesperson further detailed the evolving nature of the scheme’s integrated ICT system, stating that efforts were underway to implement measures that could flag and detect multiple registrations. He highlighted that the NYSC conducted biometric and physical verification for foreign-trained graduates, relying on certificates and details uploaded by the graduates.
To enhance the verification process, Megwa mentioned ongoing collaborations with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to integrate the use of the National Identity Number (NIN) in registration. Additionally, the NYSC expressed intentions to collaborate with the Nigerian Immigration Service to prevent inappropriate stamping of passports. Megwa assured that these measures would contribute to preventing fraudulent practices and maintaining the integrity of the NYSC registration process.
