Former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has shared that his over three-year incarceration at Yola maximum prison had a positive impact on his presidency. Obasanjo praised Governor Ahmadu Fintiri’s performance over the past five years, suggesting that if half of Nigeria’s governors emulated Fintiri’s administrative style, the country could overcome its economic challenges.
“This project is the first of its kind in this part of the country. I never thought there would be such a giant and beautiful project in Yola during my lifetime, but you made it happen, and I know you will do more because the sky is your limit,” Obasanjo lauded Fintiri.
Regarding urban renewal, Obasanjo encouraged the governor to extend his infrastructural development efforts to rural areas to boost food production, create jobs, and reduce insecurity.
Recalling his prison days, Obasanjo said, “When I was here, the now late Lamido took me as his child. He sent someone to offer me an air conditioner, but I declined, saying the person who imprisoned me didn’t want me to have that comfort. I preferred to continue using the fan in my prison room.”
In his welcome speech, Governor Fintiri expressed gratitude to Obasanjo for commissioning the project, addressing skeptics who doubted the project’s feasibility. “Someone had the guts to tell me that I was digging a pit in the center of the city without knowing how to fill it. To the glory of God, today, it is not only done but done excellently and in record time,” he stated.
Fintiri emphasized the significance of the project in the heart of the city, highlighting that when the project’s completion became evident, critics shifted their narrative to argue it wasn’t a priority. The governor reaffirmed his commitment to executing people-oriented projects as a way to repay Adamawa residents for entrusting him with the state’s leadership
