The broadcast is part of the events scheduled to commemorate Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary. Television, radio stations, and other media outlets have been advised to connect to the Nigerian Television Authority and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria for the live broadcast.
In other news, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has called on the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) and the UN Secretary-General to intervene and pressure President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to refrain from using armed security forces against peaceful demonstrators set to protest on October 1, 2024. Naija News reports that the protest is aimed at highlighting the escalating cost of living and poor governance in Nigeria.
HURIWA’s appeal for international intervention comes amid fears that the government is planning to deploy heavily armed security personnel to suppress peaceful protests, as seen in August 2024, when demonstrators were allegedly killed during the #EndBadGovernance protests. The group warned that those responsible for the unlawful killing of peaceful protesters could be prosecuted at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague for crimes against humanity.
In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA cautioned military and police chiefs, as well as the head of the nation’s secret police, that they could face justice at the ICC for any unlawful actions against peaceful protesters. The organization also expressed disappointment in the silence of the international community, including leaders like U.S. President Joe Biden and the Prime Ministers of the UK and Canada, in the face of extrajudicial killings in Nigeria.
HURIWA further emphasized that the ongoing suppression of civic freedoms by armed security forces threatens Nigeria’s constitutional democracy. It reminded the UNHRC of its responsibility to protect human rights defenders and ensure that nations like Nigeria, which has signed human rights treaties, respect and uphold fundamental freedoms guaranteed by the constitution.
