Represented by Assistant Commissioner of Police Fergus Manger during the matriculation ceremony held at the college premises over the weekend, Commissioner Alamutu urged the fresh students to uphold good moral behavior and steer clear of any involvement in cultism. He lamented the tragic trend of youths, the presumed future leaders, engaging in activities that jeopardize their own destinies, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
Alamutu, addressing the gathering, deplored the rising incidents of cult clashes and reprisal attacks in Ogun State. He implored the students to prioritize their studies, advising them to resist temptations associated with joining any form of clandestine groups.
“It is unfortunate to witness the increasing rate of cult-related killings in the state, with the youth – the potential future leaders – being the primary victims. You must distance yourselves from affiliating with such groups because once you join, leaving becomes a perilous endeavor. Instead, focus on your academic pursuits to ensure a successful future,” remarked Commissioner Alamutu.
During the matriculation, the Vice Chancellor of Abia State University, Prof Onyemachi Ogbulu, clarified the institution’s affiliation with Harvarde School. Prof Ogbulu, represented by Prof John Ogbonna, Director of the Institute for Continuing Education at the university, cautioned the students to adhere to the school’s rules or face consequences.
“This matriculation marks your formal admission into the university as bona fide students. Concentrate on your studies and avoid distractions, as the university will promptly show the exit to those who do not conform to its standards,” emphasized Prof Ogbulu.
Dr. Adebayo Oluwatosin, the President of Harvarde College, echoed the sentiment, urging the matriculating students for the 2023/2024 academic session to brace themselves for the academic challenges ahead. He made it clear that the college would not tolerate any form of lawlessness or unseriousness.
As authorities sound the alarm on the perils of cultism, it remains to be seen how the students will respond to the call for responsible behavior and a focus on their education.
