In a series of operations conducted in July, the task force recovered 13 trucks carrying stolen crude oil, Automotive Gas Oil (diesel), and Premium Motor Spirit (petrol). These operations led to the arrest of 17 individuals implicated in these illegal activities.

Olumuyiwa Adejobi, spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force, provided details during a press briefing in Abuja, accompanied by Bayo Sulaiman, Commander of the Special Task Force. Adejobi revealed that the arrests occurred in Adamawa State.

“On July 13, 2024, Task Force operatives in Adamawa intercepted three Toyota Corolla cars loaded with 130 jerry cans of 25 liters each filled with Premium Motor Spirit. One vehicle had 50 jerry cans, while the other two carried 40 jerry cans each,” Adejobi said.

The vehicles and their cargo were seized at the Girei Divisional Police Headquarters in Adamawa, and the suspects were detained. Initial investigations suggest the syndicate was involved in smuggling petroleum products into neighboring Cameroon.

Commander Bayo Sulaiman showed journalists the seized trucks and emphasized that all 17 suspects have been charged. “We do not detain suspects without cause. Some are already in prison, and the seized items, including vehicles and their contents, are now government property,” Sulaiman noted.

The police have requested court approval to forfeit the vehicles and other seized items to the government. “Our legal team is working to secure convictions in these cases,” Sulaiman added.
