The agreement, named after Samoa where it was signed on November 15, 2023, has sparked controversy, with allegations from groups like the African Bar Association (AfBA) claiming it mandates signatory countries to endorse LGBT rights and other controversial measures.

Despite reassurances from the federal government that the agreement does not compel Nigeria to violate its laws on same-sex relationships, doubts persist among many Nigerians. Okupe attributed this misinformation partly to a communication gap between the government, President Bola Tinubu, and the public.

Okupe criticized opposition parties for allegedly spreading misleading information to tarnish President Tinubu’s image, warning that such actions risk damaging national unity and inciting civil unrest.

“This deliberate misinformation on the Samoa agreement signed by the FG is clearly treasonable. It aims to discredit the FG and create disaffection within the country. It’s crucial for all Nigerians, including opposition leaders, to condemn such acts and refrain from further politicizing the issue,” Okupe emphasized.
