According to him, there are only two ways to leave a political party—by resignation or expulsion—and Jonathan has done neither.

“Goodluck Jonathan is still a member of the Peoples Democratic Party. He has not resigned. There are two ways to leave a party: either you resign or you are removed. Meanwhile, speculation continues to swirl over Jonathan’s possible return to active politics to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Jibrin Okutepa, has cautioned that it would be unconstitutional for Jonathan to contest and win the presidency again. Speaking on Arise News on Tuesday, Okutepa recalled that since 2013 he has consistently questioned Jonathan’s eligibility to seek another term, citing constitutional limits.

Okutepa argued that under the 1999 Constitution, Jonathan has already served six years in office. If he were to win in 2027 and serve another four years, he would have occupied the presidency for 10 years, which exceeds the maximum constitutional limit of eight years.
