A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Sani, has expressed doubts over Peter Obi’s ability to fulfil his pledge to serve only one term if elected President, citing the likely pressure from his supporters.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking on Tuesday’s edition of Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, Sani argued that while Obi may genuinely intend to keep his one-term promise, the final outcome may be beyond his control.

According to him, even if the Labour Party presidential candidate is sincere, the reality is that both his loyal supporters and other Nigerians—particularly if he performs well—would push for him to seek a second term.

“Mr. Peter Obi could be very sincere. After I made that comment, some people responded, saying that even if he swore at a shrine, they still wouldn’t believe him. Others dismissed it as mere tales by moonlight. But my point is not about Obi’s integrity—it’s about his tendency to yield to his supporters’ demands.

“We all know his supporters won’t accept a one-term presidency because the Constitution allows two terms. And if his first term is remarkable, they’ll urge him to continue. There are so many obstacles to that promise. It’s a promise made, but it may not be a promise kept. The question isn’t whether Obi will want to keep it—it’s whether he’ll be allowed to keep it,” Sani said.

Jonathan Is the Best Alternative
While acknowledging Obi’s integrity, Sani maintained that former President Goodluck Jonathan remains the most suitable choice for the PDP in the 2027 elections.

He explained that Jonathan’s candidacy would align with the political interests of the northern region, given that constitutional provisions restrict him to only one term of four years.

“We’re not considering Jonathan from a promise perspective—that’s already settled. The law is clear: he cannot serve more than one term. So, all he can do is serve that single term and leave,” Sani stated.
