As efforts to forge a coalition against President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 election intensify, internal disagreements over power zoning and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s political ambitions are causing significant delays in negotiations.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

A reliable source involved in the discussions revealed that the camps of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, are insisting that power remain in the South for the next eight years. This demand has complicated talks, stalling progress and creating tension among key opposition figures.

The source further disclosed that uncertainty over Atiku’s potential 2027 candidacy is a major stumbling block, as Southern politicians are hesitant to fully engage without clarity on his position. While Atiku has openly called for opposition unity, concerns persist that his ambitions may conflict with those of Southern political leaders.

The coalition talks gained momentum following the defection of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai from the APC to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) on March 10, further strengthening the opposition movement. Key figures, including former SGF Babachir Lawal and CUPP National Secretary Peter Ahmeh, have been actively involved, while several notable leaders from the APC, such as Rotimi Amaechi and Kayode Fayemi, sent apologies for their absence.

According to the source, negotiations are stalled because several key figures in the discussions also have presidential ambitions. “Many Southern politicians interested in replacing Tinubu are reluctant to commit without knowing Atiku’s stance. If they fully engage and the coalition later opens the race to all, Atiku could seize the opportunity, as he did in 2019 and 2023, jeopardizing their chances and their region’s influence,” the source explained.

This unresolved zoning debate continues to hinder progress, with many opposition leaders hesitant to participate openly until the issue is settled.
