In a social media post, the organisation stated:
“Mary Talmon is one of the nine women killed on Monday, 8 December 2025, when the military opened fire during a protest over persistent communal clashes in Lamurde, Adamawa State.”

According to Amnesty International, the women were unarmed and peacefully protesting to demand stronger government intervention in the prolonged violent conflict between the Bachama and Chobo communities.

The group further criticised the deployment of security forces in crisis zones, noting that their presence often leads to an escalation of violence rather than restoring order.

“The Nigerian authorities must conduct a transparent and impartial investigation into this alleged horrific use of excessive force by the military,” it insisted.

The Nigerian Army, however, denied responsibility for the deaths, claiming they were caused by a local militia whose members “opened fire in the area” due to “unprofessional handling of automatic weapons.”

But Amnesty International’s Nigeria office disputes this narrative, maintaining that its findings—including eyewitness accounts and testimonies from families—confirm soldiers were responsible for the killings.

It also faulted both federal and state governments for their handling of the long-standing communal conflict, describing their response as “grossly inadequate, delayed, and ineffective.”

“The Nigerian authorities’ response to the communal violence between Bachama and Chobo communities is totally inadequate, too slow, and ineffective,” the group said.

Amnesty further noted that security agencies often arrive late to scenes of violence, and in cases where they do respond—such as the Lamurde protest—their actions allegedly worsen the situation.

“In instances where Nigerian security agencies did respond, as in Lamurde LGA on Monday, December 8, 2025, they employed excessive or unlawful force, resulting in even more deaths and destruction,” the statement added.
