A large crowd of protesters from Ondo has gathered at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja, demanding the immediate reassignment of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola, from the state. The protesters sought a meeting with INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu to voice their concerns. This demonstration follows a similar appeal from Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, who raised issues about Babalola’s alleged ties to the ruling All Progressives Congress just a week earlier. During a campaign rally for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akure, Makinde highlighted that Babalola’s local connections in Ondo could compromise the fairness of the electoral process.
Ayo Adeyemi, the leader of the protesters and Convener of the Ondo Youth League, reiterated the governor’s concerns in statements to reporters. He emphasized that while they held no personal animosity toward Babalola, the potential for bias in the upcoming election could not be ignored. Adeyemi stated, “Redeploying Babalola is in the best interest of our people and INEC to ensure a free and credible election.”
“We urgently demand that INEC redeploy Ondo Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola, from the state. We acknowledge her achievements, particularly as a woman in a prominent role. However, for a fair election in Ondo, we cannot have Babalola overseeing the process. She grew up here, knows nearly everyone in the public sector, and is highly familiar with the state. Babalola hasn’t done anything wrong; we simply want her reassigned to avoid any potential conflict of interest,” Adeyemi said.
“We’re not here to criticize INEC’s operations; we just want an unbiased REC to oversee the upcoming governorship election,” he added.
In response to the protesters, INEC National Commissioner, Major General Modibbo Alkali (retd), commended their disciplined behavior. Alkali assured the crowd that their concerns regarding Babalola’s position would be taken seriously.
“We appreciate your organized presence here today. INEC operates impartially, without alignment to any political party or candidate. We function under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he stated. “We’ve received your letter, and INEC will thoroughly consider it. Rest assured, your concerns will be analyzed and addressed by the commission chairman.”
