Peter Obi Reacts Angrily To Super Eagles’ Boycott Over Unpaid Allowances
Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has condemned the Federal Government over reports that the Super Eagles are being owed allowances, calling the situation a “national disgrace” and a reflection of misplaced priorities.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
His statement comes amid widespread criticism after midfielder Alex Iwobi shared a video revealing the allegedly poor living conditions of the national team in Rabat, Morocco, ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff against Gabon.
In a post on his (Twitter) handle on Tuesday, Obi expressed deep disappointment that players who “continue to give their all in representing Nigeria” were being denied their rightful dues, even as the government “lavishly spends on irrelevant and self-serving ventures.”
He wrote:
“It is truly unfortunate that our Super Eagles, who consistently give their best in representing our dear nation, are being owed their allowances.
We always seem to find money for wasteful spending and political patronage, yet we cannot pay those who patriotically raise our flag, bring us pride, and serve with dedication. This is what defines a ‘now disgraced country.’”
Obi lamented that the neglect of national athletes sends a discouraging message to young Nigerians, undermining the value of patriotism and commitment.
“When those who serve the country are not treated with dignity, it tells our youth that hard work and service are not rewarded,” he added.
“Those representing Nigeria deserve prompt payment and respect. We must do better as a nation.”
