Four individuals suspected of impersonating officials from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have been arrested in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State. According to reports from Naija News, the suspects were apprehended while planning to kidnap someone for a ransom of ₦150 million.

The suspects were publicly displayed on Wednesday at the headquarters of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command.

During a press briefing in Uyo, the Commissioner of Police for the state, CP Waheed Ayilara, identified Emmanuel Akpayak as the ringleader. CP Ayilara disclosed that Akpayak orchestrated the kidnapping of an individual whom he owed over ₦12 million, intending to extort money from him and potentially eliminate him to evade repayment of the debt.

The other three suspects were named as Echem Ovurizichi Weneka, Promise Udofia, and Jeremiah Johnson Okon.

The investigation led by the Commissioner of Police revealed that Emmanuel Augustine Akpayak had organized the abduction and planned murder of the victim by equipping armed individuals with EFCC vests and uniforms for the operation.

It was further revealed that the victim was enticed to a specific location, and a subsequent search of the main suspect’s residence uncovered four sets of EFCC vests.

“Information available indicates that the suspect engaged in car sales with the intended victim and owed him approximately Twelve Million Naira (₦12,000,000.00). To evade repayment, the suspect enlisted armed men to abduct and extort ₦150 million from the victim, with plans to kill him afterward, but their operation was thwarted. The suspects will face legal proceedings,” noted the Police Commissioner.

The main suspect, speaking to journalists, claimed that the person he targeted was his business partner to whom he owed money. He admitted to hiring individuals to intimidate him, alleging that attempts at resolving the matter amicably had failed. Therefore, he resorted to purchasing an EFCC vest online and providing it to his accomplices, who posed as officials, in an attempt to apprehend the man and coerce him into paying ₦150 million.

He further accused the victim of involvement in internet fraud and claimed that the victim was affluent.
