The Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) of Police for Zone 6 in Calabar, Cross River State, Jonathan Towuru, has ordered the detention of three police officers following allegations of extortion. According to a statement released on Tuesday by Nelson Okpabi, the spokesperson for the Cross River State Police Command, the officers allegedly extorted ₦3 million from a member of the public.

Towuru has initiated a thorough investigation into the incident involving the officers, who reportedly committed the extortion while on patrol duty along the Ikom-Calabar highway last week. The AIG, known for his zero-tolerance policy towards crime, has assured that appropriate disciplinary actions will be taken against the accused officers.

“The AIG, committed to a zero-tolerance stance on crime and criminality, has pledged to ensure that the officers involved face appropriate disciplinary measures. This is intended to deter others from engaging in similar misconduct,” the statement affirmed.

It further emphasized the zone’s commitment to maintaining its low crime rate and underscored that any form of criminal behavior among officers entrusted with crime prevention and maintaining public order will not be tolerated.

“The outcome of the investigation, along with the disciplinary measures, including possible orderly trials and prosecution, will be communicated to the public in due course,” the statement concluded.
