During Monday’s session at the Assembly’s official residence on Aba Road in Port Harcourt, lawmakers highlighted that the ongoing activities of caretaker committees, instituted by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, contravene a recent Supreme Court ruling prohibiting such committees from administering local governments.

The call from pro-Wike lawmakers, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, came after House Leader Major Jack brought attention to these illegal activities.

Describing the caretaker committees as illegitimate, lawmakers expressed concern over their unauthorized collection of fees and levies from the public. They accused these impostors of withdrawing funds allocated to local government councils for personal use under the guise of non-existent caretaker committees.

In a statement released by Speaker Amaewhule’s media aide, Martins Wachukwu, it was emphasized, “During the 7th Legislative Sitting of the Second Session of the Tenth Assembly, the House deliberated on the illegal activities of individuals posing as caretaker committee members.”

The statement continued, “These individuals are unlawfully imposing and collecting fees, levies, and rates from unsuspecting members of the public, in clear violation of the recent Supreme Court judgement and the provisions of the Rivers State Local Government (Amendment) Law, 2023.”

The lawmakers condemned these impostors and cautioned banks, traditional rulers, government entities, NGOs, and businesses against engaging with unelected individuals purporting to be caretaker chairmen, citing them as a threat to the state’s fragile peace.

Speaker Amaewhule stressed the urgency of law enforcement intervention to arrest these impostors and prevent potential disorder in the state. He reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to upholding constitutional provisions that mandate democratically elected officials to manage local government councils.

The statement further underscored the authority vested in the House by Section 7(1) of the 1999 Constitution and Section 64(1) of the Rivers State Local Government Law No. 5 of 2018 to enforce the directive for elected officials to govern council affairs.

In conclusion, Speaker Amaewhule reiterated the Assembly’s stance against the “blatant disregard for state laws and the Supreme Court’s ruling by certain impostors.”
