He was chosen on Sunday during an emergency plenary session presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Lami Ogenyi. Immediately after, Emberga was sworn in by the Clerk of the House, John Hwande, who administered the oath of office.
Before his emergence, the Assembly lifted Emberga’s suspension along with that of three other lawmakers. The House also temporarily set aside its operating rules to facilitate the process of electing a new Speaker.
Emberga, who is seen as an ally of Governor Hyacinth Alia, pledged to work closely with fellow lawmakers in advancing the state’s development agenda.
His election followed the sudden resignation of Aondona Dajoh as Speaker earlier on Sunday.
Dajoh’s resignation was conveyed in a letter he personally signed, dated August 24, 2025, and addressed to the Assembly.
The letter, titled ‘Resignation as the Speaker, Benue State House of Assembly’, read in part:
“I write to resign my position as the Speaker, Benue State House of Assembly, effective today, August 24, 2025.
This is done in good faith and in the best interest of the state. I want to appreciate my dear colleagues for the opportunity they gave me to be the first among equals.
I pledge to remain committed to my duties as a legislator and representative of Gboko West State Constituency.”
