The Presidency has criticized Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for his disapproval of the Federal Government’s plan to purchase new aircraft for President Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima.
In a statement released on Monday, June 17, Obi described the decision as insensitive, particularly when many Nigerians are struggling with economic hardships caused by government policies.
Responding swiftly, Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, labeled Obi’s comments as reckless, questioning whether Obi prefers the President to risk flying in outdated, potentially unsafe aircraft.
Speaking with Punch, Onanuga said:
“Does Peter Obi want the President dead? Is that his wish? Does he want him to continue flying in a dilapidated plane and face the same fate as the Vice Presidents of Malawi and Iran? This is a fundamental aspect of governance. Ensuring the President’s safety is crucial. The current aircraft, bought during Obasanjo’s administration over 20 years ago, recently experienced issues during a trip to Saudi Arabia. Consequently, the President had to travel to the UK on a commercial flight. Even the maintenance team recommended a replacement.”
Onanuga further emphasized that the National Assembly officially recommended acquiring new aircraft, deeming Obi’s statements as ill-informed and unnecessary.
Recently, the House of Representatives Committee on National Security and Intelligence called on the Federal Government to procure new aircraft for President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima.
