Speaking through De Renaissance Patriots Foundation, they announced via a statement from their Media Office that they would resist any attempt to include Lagos in the Western Region.Adelani Adeniji-Adele, representing the Foundation, stated:

“This proposed bill signals a threat to Lagos State’s autonomy, attempting to integrate us into a larger group that contradicts our values. Crucially, there were no extensive consultations to determine if such a move aligns with our desires.

Historically, since becoming a colony, we have preferred a standalone status rather than being part of any Western Region or Province.

“The statement emphasized past grievances, noting that Lagos indigenes have consistently faced marginalization from their South West neighbors.

“In over 100 years, we have never thrived as part of any region, particularly not the Western Region. The brief inclusion in the Western Region was a historical anomaly.

“The Foundation demanded a referendum to accurately reflect the wishes of Lagos residents. “We, the indigenes of Lagos State, do not wish to be part of the regional government as proposed. Our leaders opposed this in 1953, and we gained autonomy in 1967.

We will not accept this bill.”They urged National Assembly representatives to consult with elder statesmen and stakeholders before making decisions on the bill.

“This issue transcends party and state government lines. Lagos cannot be diminished through this South West Region proposal. The historical struggle during colonial rule remains relevant,” the statement concluded.
