In a recent op-ed, Reno Omokri, the notable Nigerian author and critic, has called out Oby Ezekwesili, the former Minister of Education and prominent activist, over what he describes as her “selective outrage” on issues of national importance. CONTINUE READING
Omokri’s take on this issue highlights several instances where Ezekwesili has seemingly turned a blind eye to significant events in her home state while magnifying similar occurrences outside the Southeast region.
The former presidential aide recounted the incident on January 16, 2023, when the Anambra State Government, which once offered Ezekwesili a political appointment, pulled down Peter Obi’s campaign billboard for violating established regulations. In Omokri’s words, Ezekwesili neither “complained” nor “ran naked in the streets,” nor labeled the move as the handiwork of an “obviously misguided regulator.”
Omokri further emphasizes her silence on pressing issues closer to home. He points out Ezekwesili’s noticeable silence over the killing of US embassy personnel by Unknown Gunmen in Anambra, not too far from her local government, on May 16, 2023. He contrasts this with her vocal outrage over the tragic death of Deborah Samuel but questions her noticeable silence over the brutal killing of Harira Jubril, a pregnant Northerner, and her four young daughters in Anambra .CONTINUE READING
He didn’t stop there. Omokri further draws attention to Ezekwesili’s renowned #BringBackOurGirls campaign but juxtaposes this with her silence on the assassination of Ahmed Gulak on May 31, 2021.
The crux of Omokri’s criticism revolves around what he perceives as Ezekwesili’s disproportionate reactions, suggesting a bias towards incidents in the Southeast. He concludes with a rather stinging remark, advising her to “focus on [her] career as an IPOB apologist and stop gaslighting Nigerians.”
As with any public figure, Ezekwesili’s actions and reactions will always be under scrutiny. However, Omokri’s piece brings to the forefront a critical conversation on the responsibilities of such figures in maintaining a balanced perspective on national issues.
