The gathering centred on key issues confronting the region, particularly the escalating insecurity.
Speaking at the meeting, Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, warned that insecurity in the North has grown beyond a regional concern and now poses a major national threat.
Calling for urgent reforms to Nigeria’s security framework, Yahaya emphasised that the creation of state police is now one of the most realistic and effective solutions to the worsening crisis.
According to him, “establishing state police remains a critical and effective mechanism to tackle the current security challenges facing the country.”
He argued that centralised policing can no longer cope with the scale of banditry, terrorism, kidnapping, farmer-herder clashes, communal violence, and other crimes displacing thousands and crippling economic activity across the North.
The Gombe State governor linked the deepening insecurity to a mix of socio-economic and environmental factors, citing underdevelopment, illiteracy, poor infrastructure, high unemployment, environmental degradation, and weak resource management as major drivers of the violence.
Yahaya urged Northern leaders to “make every effort to reverse the trend,” warning that failure to deal with these root causes would continue to hinder growth and threaten long-term stability.
He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for recent security interventions that led to the rescue of kidnap victims across the region and appealed to the Federal Government to sustain its efforts until all abductees are released.
Yahaya reaffirmed that Northern governors remain committed to collaborating with the Federal Government, security agencies, and local authorities, stating that the region is “resolute in working together to protect lives and property, including within school environments.”
Host governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State said the governors are developing coordinated regional strategies aimed at strengthening stability, protecting communities, and improving governance.
He revealed that a peer-review mechanism is already in place among the governors to enhance accountability and strengthen service delivery.
Sani also highlighted the crucial role of traditional institutions in promoting communal harmony, supporting early warning systems, and advising government actions. He urged emirs and chiefs to intensify efforts in mobilising communities against criminality.
Traditional Rulers Reaffirm Support
Speaking on behalf of the traditional rulers, the Sultan of Sokoto and Chairman of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, pledged continuous support for governors’ efforts to restore peace in the region.
He stressed that good governance must remain a priority and urged governors to ensure effective and people-focused leadership.
