A professional team under the “One Health” initiative, comprising experts from the ministries of Animal Husbandry, Health, Environment, and Information, conducted the fumigation exercise. Dr. Ibrahim-Sanchi explained that the primary objective was to prevent the disease from spreading beyond the affected facility.

The veterinary director highlighted the need for active surveillance to identify potential cases across the state. Due to the zoonotic nature of highly pathogenic avian influenza, the team is also addressing the veterinary component, while colleagues in human health are identifying individuals in contact with the infected animals for necessary action.

Dr. Ibrahim-Sanchi urged poultry owners to remain calm but vigilant, emphasizing the economic risk the disease poses. He advised sharing information among poultry farmers, implementing strict bio-security measures, and minimizing visitor access to poultry farms. Additionally, he stressed the importance of restricting bird movement and avoiding the sharing of farm implements to prevent further spread.

Collaborating with various ministries and agencies, including Health, Environment, and Information, the state is working to raise public awareness about the disease. The Director of Public Health, Abubakar Bagudu-Muhammad, confirmed the potential for human transmission and emphasized a coordinated effort involving animals, humans, the environment, and information to manage emergency health activities.

Bagudu-Muhammad called on relevant officers and stakeholders to remain vigilant, especially at border points, to prevent any potential outbreak. The state government aims to minimize the impact of avian influenza on both the poultry industry and public health.
