In a move aimed at alleviating the shortfall of doctors in the country, the MDCN has doubled the admission quota for medical students at Osun State University (Uniosun) from 100 to 200.
The decision came following a directive from the Federal Government, conveyed through the Minister of State for Health, highlighting concerns over the dwindling number of medical practitioners nationwide. The approval for this quota increase underscores the government’s commitment to bolstering the healthcare sector and ensuring adequate medical coverage for the populace.
Uniosun, located in Osogbo, received official communication of the quota adjustment through a letter addressed to the Secretary-General of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities. The letter, dated January 22, 2024, and signed by the Registrar of the Council, Dr. Tajudeen Sanusi, outlined the rationale behind the decision and emphasized the urgent need for more medical professionals.
This quota enhancement marks a significant milestone for Uniosun’s Medical School, coming on the heels of a prior increase from 50 to 100 admissions just a year ago. The move demonstrates a concerted effort by both the government and the medical education sector to address the critical shortage of doctors in Nigeria.
In response to the directive, Professor Clement Adebooye, the Vice-Chancellor of Uniosun, commended the MDCN for its proactive approach in addressing the doctor deficit. He also expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for its commitment to improving healthcare services through strategic policy interventions.
With this quota doubling, Uniosun is poised to play a pivotal role in producing a new generation of medical professionals equipped to meet the healthcare needs of the nation. The initiative reflects a collaborative effort between government agencies and educational institutions to tackle pressing healthcare challenges and enhance medical service delivery across Nigeria.
