Russia Warns ECOWAS Against Military Invasion Of Niger

In response to ECOWAS’ decision to deploy a “standby force” in order to restore constitutional democracy in the country, the Russian foreign ministry conveyed concerns about the implications of such a military invasion.

The ministry emphasized that the contemplated military solution could trigger an extended and protracted conflict within Niger. Additionally, it underscored the possibility of significant destabilization in the broader Sahara-Sahel region.

The statement from the Russian foreign ministry reads: “We are of the opinion that pursuing a military approach to address the crisis in Niger could result in a drawn-out confrontation within the nation and, more significantly, cause a pronounced destabilization across the entire Sahara-Sahel region.”

It was reported that during a demonstration near a French military base close to the capital Niamey, individuals aligned with the Niger junta were seen waving Russian flags.

Among the protesters, some voiced sentiments against France and ECOWAS. Notably, both France and the United States maintain military bases within Niger, which have been utilized to execute counterinsurgency operations in the broader region.
