Secret Police Face Backlash For Nighttime Arrest Of Female Journalist In AbujaAn online publication focused on Nigeria’s National Assembly, OrderPaper, has condemned the Department of State Services (DSS) for the recent invasion of the home of staff member Edna Ulaeto and her subsequent arrest.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a statement released on Friday, OrderPaper detailed how armed DSS operatives forcibly took Ulaeto from her residence, although the specific location was not disclosed. While it remains unclear if she is a reporter, the publication speculated that the incident may be linked to a recent story about an alleged invasion of the National Assembly.
According to the statement, on October 18, 2024, armed individuals claiming to be DSS officers stormed Ulaeto’s home, abducting her without explanation. Disturbingly, she was taken in her nightwear and treated roughly, leaving her family and neighbors in shock. There are also indications that her phone number may have been illegally tracked, a tactic typically reserved for serious criminals.
OrderPaper suspects that this abduction relates to a recent article that incorrectly reported on a DSS operation aimed at preventing an impeachment attempt against the Senate President. Despite issuing a retraction and public apology, Ulaeto’s home was raided, her belongings searched, and her family traumatized.
Witnesses who attempted to intervene or document the incident faced intimidation, with some being forced to delete footage under threat of arrest. The lack of official communication from the DSS or police raises serious concerns about the operation’s legitimacy.
Since Ulaeto’s abduction, all attempts to contact her have failed, raising fears for her safety. This alarming situation has fostered a climate of fear among OrderPaper staff, who are uncertain about what may happen next.
The publication urgently calls on the public, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), and the international community to demand Ulaeto’s immediate release and ensure her safety. They emphasize the need to condemn this unlawful attack on press freedom and human rights before it escalates further.
This incident follows the arrest of a presenter from Urban FM in Enugu by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The station reported that EFCC officials invaded during a live broadcast, but the agency denied any wrongdoing, stating that the presenter was arrested for evading inquiries related to her involvement in a Ponzi scheme that defrauded many Nigerians.
