Senate Drops Bombshell: Arrest Threatened For CBN Governor, NNPCL Boss, And IGP Over Audit Scandal
The Senate Public Accounts Committee (SPAC) has issued a stern warning, threatening to issue arrest warrants for several high-ranking government officials, including Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, Central Bank Governor Yemi Cardoso, and NNPCL Group CEO Mele Kyari, for consistently failing to appear before the committee to address audit queries.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HEREā¶
Other officials potentially facing arrest include Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) Chairman Zacch Adedeji and Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi, among other top executives.
During a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, SPAC Chairman Ahmed Aliyu Wadada condemned the officials’ repeated disregard for invitations, calling their actions disrespectful to the National Assembly and insulting to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
āNo one is above the law. If President Bola Ahmed Tinubu can take time out of his demanding schedule to address the National Assembly and present the budget, then thereās no excuse for any appointee to ignore the peopleās parliament,ā Wadada stated.
He warned that any further defiance of Senate summons would result in the issuance of arrest warrants and a recommendation to President Tinubu for their dismissal.
Specifically, Wadada criticized FIRS Chairman Zacch Adedeji for ignoring over eight invitations, questioning his commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda (RHA) and the Presidentās mandate.
āIf Adedeji truly shares the dream of the RHA, why hasnāt he appeared before us to address crucial issues? We are elected by Nigerians, not appointed. If he refuses to respect our mandate, he should at least respect the one given to him by the President,ā Wadada said.
He warned that any future defiance would lead to a warrant for Adedejiās arrest and a call for his replacement by President Tinubu.
The SPAC Chairman also criticized NNPCL and the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), accusing them of failing to provide adequate explanations for billions of naira in public funds. Despite multiple invitations, NNPCL has failed to appear before the committee, and the written responses provided have been incomplete. Wadada emphasized that failure to attend the next meeting would result in an arrest warrant.
The committee also alleged that significant financial irregularities uncovered in the NCS were left unexplained, despite the Auditor-Generalās report, leaving the committee frustrated by the lack of cooperation.
