As reported by Naija News, the APC has recently gained several high-profile defectors, including Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his predecessor Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, and the entire structure of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State. Numerous lawmakers from both the PDP and Labour Party have also joined the APC, citing internal crises within their former parties.

Speaking at the North-West Zonal Stakeholders Meeting held in Kaduna on Saturday, Abbas highlighted the APC’s post-2023 achievements—securing governorship positions in 19 states and holding a majority in both chambers of the National Assembly.

He noted that recent defections from lawmakers in Kano, Osun, Kebbi, Delta, and Edo have brought the total number of federal lawmakers who have switched to the APC in the House of Representatives to 25.

A statement from Abbas’s Special Adviser, Musa Krishi, quoted the Speaker as saying:
“Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa have both joined our party, and we expect even more high-profile defections in the coming months. This underscores the growing confidence of Nigerians in the APC and President Tinubu.”

Abbas also celebrated the APC’s victory in the 2024 Edo State gubernatorial election, where Senator Monday Okpebholo emerged victorious. He credited the party’s internal reforms, improved candidate selection, and strengthened grassroots structures for its expanding influence.

The Speaker pointed to the APC’s regional progress through strategic realignments and development efforts in Zamfara, Sokoto, Rivers, and Bayelsa states.

He emphasized the importance of the North-West as Nigeria’s largest voting bloc, with over 22 million registered voters as per the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) data from 2023.
“The North-West is not just a participant in elections—it’s a critical force in determining outcomes,” Abbas stated. “However, numerical strength alone is not enough; unity and discipline are essential.”

Abbas called for greater internal cohesion, urging party members to uphold the APC’s values and avoid divisions that have hindered success in the past.

He also advocated for immediate action on pressing issues in the North-West, including rising insecurity and a decline in agricultural productivity. Abbas proposed the creation of a regional coordination platform involving lawmakers, governors, and experts to develop targeted strategies for federal intervention.

He concluded by stressing the importance of involving more youth and women in the party’s activities, noting that they make up a significant portion of the population.
