The decision followed a motion presented by Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, who represents Ondo South, during the Senate’s plenary session on Tuesday.
While leading the debate, Senator Ibrahim underscored that insecurity is not only a national concern but a global one. He referenced the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine as a key factor disrupting global stability.
He further explained that escalating tensions between the Global North and South have intensified food insecurity and obstructed progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Senator Ibrahim also pointed to the U.S. tariff disputes and the shifting global power dynamics as elements of an emerging world order—marked by strict immigration policies, revoked visas, and nations monetizing citizenship—all of which challenge decades of globalization.
He urged Nigeria to define a clearer international strategy, stressing the Senate’s role in guiding the executive on maximizing national interests.
Ibrahim warned that future global confrontations may shift from conventional warfare to economic battles, driven by innovative but disruptive security threats.
Bringing the focus back to Nigeria, the senator described the security challenges as widespread and severe—citing increased cases of terrorism, kidnapping, and banditry in both cities and remote communities.
He commended President Bola Tinubu’s dedication to national security but called for enhanced military strategies, particularly in intelligence gathering and support.
