“The menace of crude oil theft and illegal refining must be tackled to safeguard the nation’s resources and protect the environment,” Okunbor stated. He made the remarks through the company’s Exploration Manager, Gogo Eneyok, during the Annual International Conference and Exhibition of the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists in Lagos.
Okunbor reaffirmed Shell’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s energy security and advancing progress through its operations in the upstream, midstream, downstream, and renewable energy sectors. He noted that Shell’s diverse business operations are integrated across the entire energy value chain and are actively addressing challenges in line with the theme of the conference: ‘Resolving the Nigeria Energy Trilemma: Energy Security, Sustainable Growth & Affordability’.
In addition to SPDC, Shell’s other operations in Nigeria include Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCo), Shell Nigeria Gas, Daystar Power, All On, and the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG), in which Shell holds a 25.6% stake. Okunbor reiterated that Shell, in collaboration with the government, regulators, and stakeholders, is playing a key role in finding solutions to the nation’s energy challenges.
He also highlighted Shell’s commitment to sustainability, stating that the company is leveraging advanced technologies to reduce emissions in its operations and is on track to meet its Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reduction targets. Okunbor further pointed out that Shell Nigeria Gas is expanding domestic gas delivery through its 150-kilometer distribution network, while Daystar Power and All On are providing communities with cleaner and more affordable energy solutions.
However, Okunbor stressed that for these initiatives to achieve their full potential, the government must create a more conducive regulatory environment with continuous improvements in policy and infrastructure to support these efforts.
