Forbes reported that Dangote, the founder of the Dangote Group, slipped to the second position as his wealth experienced a decline from $13.5 billion in 2023 to $9.7 billion as of Thursday, January 4, 2024—a significant loss of $3.8 billion.
Simultaneously, Rupert’s net worth saw a decrease from $10.7 billion in 2023 to $10 billion during the same period in 2024. Johann Rupert, the chairman of the Swiss luxury goods firm Compagnie Financiere Richemont, is renowned for brands such as Cartier and Montblanc.
Rupert owns 7% of the diversified investment firm Remgro, which he chairs, and 26% of Reinet, an investment holding company based in Luxembourg. Notably, Rupert has been a vocal opponent of plans to allow fracking in the Karoo, a region of South Africa where he owns land.
In addition to this shift in rankings, Abdul Samad Rabiu, the chairman of BUA Group, and Mike Adenuga, the chairperson of Globacom, also experienced changes in their billionaire positions. Adenuga moved to the 10th position from the 6th, while Rabiu shifted from the 4th position to the 6th.
