Sources told Punch that the explosion occurred when a group of scavengers at a metal scrapyard attempted to dismantle one of the grenades they had acquired. The device detonated during the process, killing one instantly and injuring three others.

A local resident, Akin Olawale, recounted the frightening moment, explaining that a loud explosion was heard just after 12 p.m. and the police were quickly contacted as no one could determine the cause at first. It was only after the authorities arrived that it was revealed to be a grenade. “The scavengers were trying to cut one open when it exploded,” Olawale said.

Another witness, who spoke anonymously for security reasons, recounted seeing a vehicle transporting the injured to the hospital, visibly shocked by their condition. “We saw the injured being rushed to the hospital. The driver couldn’t even stop due to the traffic,” the resident said.

Lagos State Police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident on Friday, clarifying that the explosion involved a military-grade grenade. “One person was killed and three were hospitalized. The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. The Explosive and Ordinance Department has ensured the area is safe, and the scene has been secured. An investigation is underway,” Hundeyin stated.
