President Bola Tinubu recently urged the National Assembly to begin developing a constitutional amendment to allow for the establishment of state police, citing the move as a way to strengthen the fight against insurgency and improve security for citizens.

Speaking in an interview on ARISE Television, Sagay expressed confidence that state police could be successfully established if Northern governors finally support the initiative. He noted that the idea had previously faced resistance from Northern politicians.

Sagay said, “That remains my concern. In my view, when Northern governors opposed state police, I felt that even if they don’t want it in their states, the South should be allowed to have it. The problem was the attitude of ‘we don’t want it, and neither should you.’

“If the constitution is amended to permit states to establish their own police forces, I believe the fight against bandits, killers, and other criminals will be much more effective, and the safety of Nigerians will be better protected.

“Now that virtually all 36 state governors are reportedly on board and willing to invest in the process, there should be no obstacle in securing approval from the state Houses of Assembly. After all, only a majority is needed, not all of them.

“Once the governors agree, I don’t see any barrier remaining. I know the National Assembly has largely respected the wishes of the President and his governors, so if the governors support it, the path is clear for state police to be implemented.”
