Shehu Sani, former Senator for Kaduna Central, has criticized opposition parties for blaming President Bola Tinubu for their internal crises, urging them instead to take responsibility for resolving their own problems.

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Wednesday, Sani said it was regrettable that opposition groups were expecting the president to solve issues within their ranks.

According to him, “It makes no sense to have problems in your own party and then shift blame to someone outside. If there are issues in the PDP, LP, NNPP or SDP, it is up to those parties to resolve them. I don’t understand if they’re expecting the president to join their parties and fix their mess.”

The former lawmaker’s comments come amid persistent internal conflicts within major opposition parties such as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), which have lost several members—including governors and lawmakers—to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Many defectors cited internal wrangling as their reason for leaving.

Opposition leaders have accused President Tinubu and the APC of fueling these instabilities. But Sani dismissed the accusations, describing them as baseless and irresponsible.

“If your party members are working against your interest and you fail to discipline them—then turn around to blame the president—you’re simply being irresponsible,” he said. “It’s unserious to expect the president to fix your party while you watch your internal issues spiral.”

Sani also emphasized that it’s not in Tinubu’s political interest to stabilize opposition parties. “No president will try to repair a weapon that will be used against him,” he argued. “Destabilizing your opponent is a political strategy. It keeps them too distracted to mount an effective challenge.”
