In an interview on Thursday with Arise News, Sununu emphasized that the administration of President Bola Tinubu is dedicated to transparency in its humanitarian initiatives.

He explained that the ministry has adopted a more transparent approach to identifying the most vulnerable individuals to ensure that palliatives reach the right people. While he admitted that corruption had plagued the ministry in the past, he assured that measures have been taken to address it, including the appointment of two new ministers to oversee the ministry’s efforts.

Sununu highlighted that the ministry, in collaboration with the World Bank, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), is working to ensure that every recipient of palliative aid has a verifiable identity.

“We are working to strengthen our transparency measures, ensuring that aid is no longer distributed indiscriminately. The CBN has issued a directive that anyone receiving palliative support through government programs must have a digital identity, including a telephone number, BVN, and an account number. We are committed to implementing this with the help of the World Bank and NIMC,” he said.

He also addressed concerns that not everyone may have these digital identifiers, acknowledging the challenge but reaffirming the government’s commitment to providing them as quickly as possible. Sununu emphasized that, with the new accountability framework, the government will ensure the success of its programs is measurable and verifiable, stating that evidence of the impact will be transparent and irrefutable.
