The teachers expressed their disappointment that, despite Bayelsa’s status as one of the top four states with high earnings from the federation account, the welfare of teachers has been overlooked.
Schools in Bayelsa state had closed on August 29 due to anticipated floods and were scheduled to reopen on November 13.
The decision to strike came after an earlier three-day warning strike did not prompt the Bayelsa government to take action.
The union has given a 14-day ultimatum to the state government and local government councils in Bayelsa to address the concerns of primary and secondary school teachers across the state, or they will initiate industrial action.
