Tension In Camp: University Workers Stretch Strike Deadline By Two Weeks!
The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Allied Institutions (NASU) has extended its strike ultimatum to the Federal Government by another two weeks.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The two unions had earlier issued a seven-day notice over unresolved welfare issues, warning of a nationwide shutdown if their demands were ignored.
In a joint statement signed by SSANU President, Muhammed Ibrahim, the unions accused the government of “unjust disbursement of earned allowances, non-payment of outstanding entitlements, among other grievances.”
Ibrahim recalled that JAC had written to the Federal Government in June on the lingering labour disputes, which prompted a meeting with the Minister of Education on July 4, 2025.
In a fresh circular to their chapters on Tuesday, the unions explained that the decision to extend the deadline was taken after a meeting with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Abel Enitan, on September 19.
“The leadership of JAC of NASU and SSANU, arising from a meeting held on Monday, 22nd September, 2025, decided to keep you updated on the current status of our agitations forwarded for resolution to the Federal Government,” the letter stated.
They noted that the consultative meeting was attended by the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), senior officials from the Ministries of Education and Labour, and other key stakeholders.
According to JAC, while the meeting addressed their concerns, there were no concrete resolutions, hence the need for an extension.
“In view of this, the JAC of NASU and SSANU has resolved to extend the ultimatum by an additional two weeks, effective today. This provides the government another opportunity to initiate the necessary processes to meet our demands.
“If the government fails to respond within this extended period, the JAC will have no option but to embark on a series of legitimate industrial actions,” the unions warned.
