Tension Peaks As EFCC Grounds Malami, Intensifies $490m Abacha Loot Investigation

The move is linked to the ongoing probe into the handling of $490 million in Abacha loot previously recovered through Mutual Legal Assistance (MLAT).
Malami has been restricted from leaving Nigeria for one month, in line with strict bail terms granted during his release.
Sources revealed that one of the conditions for his 1:00 a.m. release on Saturday was a directive requiring him to report to the EFCC headquarters in Abuja every day for questioning.
The former AGF is expected to provide comprehensive explanations regarding the movement and current status of the recovered funds throughout the next month.
According to The Nation, a fact sheet indicated that Malami has several issues to clarify before the EFCC over the next 30 days.
The document stated:
“We asked him to explain the whereabouts of the $490 million Abacha loot recovered through Mutual Legal Assistance (MLAT).
“We did not accuse him of stealing the money, but he must account for it. This is one of the matters he needs to address with our investigators.
“Given the large volume of documents to review and the number of detectives he must interact with, his international passport has been seized.
“One of the conditions for granting him bail at 1:00 a.m. on Saturday was that he must report daily to the EFCC headquarters for further engagement.
“He cannot leave the country unless mutually agreed upon by the EFCC or approved by a High Court.
“We will not engage him in a war of words; instead, we will make our findings public after a thorough investigation.”
