The protest, reportedly staged by hundreds of Ghanaian citizens, accused Nigerians of engaging in activities such as mass prostitution, ritual killings, kidnappings, and violent crimes. In a viral video circulated on Tuesday, demonstrators were seen carrying placards with inflammatory messages including: “Armed robbery and violent attacks must stop,” “Our health at stake due to mass prostitution,” “Nigerians are kidnapping and using people for rituals,” and “Our kids are getting missing because of Igbos.”
In a statement issued Tuesday night to Naija News, the Senate Committee described the protest as “deeply disturbing and contrary to the spirit of African brotherhood.”
The Committee emphasized the importance of maintaining the long-standing relationship between Nigeria and Ghana, built on mutual respect, shared history, and regional cooperation. It reiterated that both nations, as prominent members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), must lead by example in upholding peace, unity, and integration as enshrined in the ECOWAS charter.
Commending the swift response of government officials, the Committee applauded the efforts of the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, and the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, for their timely diplomatic interventions. It also acknowledged the collaborative work of both the Nigerian and Ghanaian High Commissions in addressing the issue and restoring calm.
The Committee reassured Nigerians residing in Ghana that both countries’ authorities are in close communication and have taken proactive steps to protect their rights and welfare.
In conclusion, the Committee expressed solidarity with all law-abiding Nigerians in Ghana and urged them to remain peaceful and avoid inciteful rhetoric. It reaffirmed that diplomatic channels are being effectively utilized to resolve the situation and preserve harmony between the two West African nations.
