President Bola Tinubu’s spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, has justified the president’s decision to eliminate the petrol subsidy, asserting that it was a necessary move based on economic pragmatism. Ngelale explained in a recent interview with media entrepreneur Chude Jideonwo that although President Tinubu executed the subsidy removal, the plan was set in motion before he assumed office.
Ngelale clarified that the funding for the petrol subsidy extended until July 1, 2023, but President Tinubu chose to announce its removal on May 29, shortly after taking office. This strategic move aimed to preempt the impending deadline and allow the nation sufficient time to prepare for the ensuing economic adjustments.
The decision to abolish the subsidy has triggered discussions nationwide, with some lauding its potential long-term benefits for Nigeria’s economy, while others express concerns about its immediate impact on the average Nigerian’s cost of living.
Petrol subsidies have been a significant financial burden on the nation, and advocates for their removal argue that redirecting the funds could support more impactful developmental projects. Ngelale emphasized that the subsidy removal announcement was not a spontaneous decision by the president but part of a pre-existing plan, with funds allocated for subsidy payment until July 1.
“I want to make that clear that it is for a reason he came out on May 29, he said subsidy is gone but there are funds in place to pay for the subsidy all through the month of June, meaning that gives him above a month to be able to find out what things are and be able to move forward with respect to the removal,” Ngelale stated.
