She explained that after Buhari’s death, similar behaviour could have escalated but was curtailed by the firm handling of his burial arrangements by the state. According to her, the official management of the funeral prevented further excesses and potential embarrassment.
Aisha Buhari also addressed long-standing speculation about the former president’s health, insisting that he died from pneumonia and not from cancer, as widely rumoured. Her disclosures are contained in a new biography, From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, written by Dr Charles Omole.
The book identifies weak strategic communication as a major shortcoming of the Buhari administration, noting that ordinary developments were often misinterpreted as conspiracies due to a lack of transparency and coherent messaging.
Reflecting on this, Aisha Buhari said rumours frequently spiralled out of control because there was no clear communication strategy, leaving Nigerians confused about what to believe. She noted that this atmosphere of uncertainty persisted until the end of her husband’s life.
Speaking on events after Buhari’s death, she said individuals who once wielded influence through access to the former president feared losing relevance and power. According to her, they felt threatened by both her presence and that of her son, despite her insistence that neither of them harboured any desire for retaliation.
She credited the state’s oversight of the burial process with maintaining order, saying it stabilised the proceedings and reduced opportunities for interference. The strict control of arrangements, she added, denied certain figures the chance to impose themselves.
Aisha Buhari also criticised some of the courtiers around the former president, describing them as lacking the capacity to operate within the inner circle of national leadership.
Recalling Buhari’s final days in Aso Villa, she described the residence as an ecosystem that quickly became crowded with relatives, courtiers and staff who sought influence. She alleged that some attempted to sideline others, including herself.
Emphasising her position, Aisha Buhari stated that while others were free to live wherever they wished, she would not accept being undermined in her own home. She concluded that no one could simultaneously control her husband’s office and seek authority over her as his wife within Aso Villa.
