In his statement, Shekarau acknowledged President Tinubu’s decision to suspend the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu. Tinubu’s directive to the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, to investigate all financial transactions involving the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation was prompted by Edu’s controversial actions.

The Minister faced scrutiny following the leakage of a memo on December 20, 2023, which revealed her instruction to the Accountant-General of the Federation, Oluwatoyin Madein, to transfer N585 million to a private account owned by Oniyelu Bridget. The ministry claimed that Bridget currently serves as the Project Accountant for Grants for Vulnerable Groups.

Shekarau’s call for a reduction in the number of appointees aligns with broader efforts to streamline government operations and optimize resource allocation in a bid to enhance efficiency and fiscal responsibility.
