Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has cautioned religious leaders against insulting and criticizing the government at all levels. She delivered this warning during the opening ceremony of the four-day International Conference of the African Biblical Leadership Initiative in Abuja.
The conference, themed “Value-based Leadership Model for Africa,” drew participation from various African and European leaders, along with global Christian figures.
Princess Gloria Akobundu, National Coordinator and CEO of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development, represented Oluremi Tinubu at the event. She urged religious leaders to promote peace and emulate Christ by fervently praying for those in power rather than resorting to abuse.
Akobundu highlighted the numerous challenges facing leadership in Africa today, stating, “To our spiritual fathers, I urge you to foster peace and development and pray for the government. We should avoid cursing or insulting the government; instead, we must speak truthfully to our leaders and engage the conscience of our citizens.”
She emphasized that leaders should not assume God’s role, reminding everyone that God can use anyone to fulfill His purpose on earth. “Africa is at a crossroads, facing significant challenges that require effective leadership. As Christian leaders, we must adopt a value-based leadership model reflecting the teachings of Jesus Christ, founded on justice, integrity, wisdom, and social harmony,” she added.
