The Federal Government, through the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), has shut down 14 facilities in Abuja for breaching environmental laws within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to NESREA, the closures followed repeated violations and a failure to comply with prior warnings issued to the affected facilities.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, NESREA Director General, Prof. Innocent Barikor, said that the agency had earlier served notices outlining specific infractions and timelines for corrective measures, but the facilities failed to act.

“The defaulting facilities were given adequate time to rectify the violations, but they ignored the directives,” Barikor stated.

He explained that the enforcement action spanned multiple sectors—quarrying, blasting, construction, and nightlife—targeting offenders who disregarded environmental compliance.

Barikor revealed that NESREA received multiple complaints from residents, particularly about Ibiza Nite Club and De Hive Night Club, both of which were found to consistently exceed permissible noise levels in violation of the National Environmental (Noise Standards and Control) Regulations 2009.

“Excessive noise, especially in residential areas, poses health hazards and contributes to environmental degradation,” he warned.

One of the more serious cases involved Dai Jin Jia Investment Limited, a quarrying and blasting company accused of endangering surrounding communities with unregulated blasting operations. NESREA’s investigation found the company guilty of air pollution, excessive ground vibrations, and hazardous boulder fly-outs.

Barikor disclosed that the firm was using Charge Loading Density (CLD) of 4,000kg per blast—well above the 3,000kg limit set under the National Environmental (Quarrying and Blasting Operations) Regulations 2013. The company also violated limits on blast hole and pit depths.

In the construction sector, 11 companies and estate developers were penalized for operating without the required Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) or Environmental Audit Report (EAR), as mandated by the National Environmental (Construction Sector) Regulations 2011.
