Who Is Nentawe Yilwatda? What To Know About APC’s Alleged New Chairman

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is poised to announce Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, the current Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, as its new national chairman. This follows President Bola Tinubu’s reported approval of his appointment late Wednesday night.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

This decision appears to end weeks of speculation over who would succeed Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, who stepped down as chairman due to health concerns.

A member of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) revealed to Daily Sun that Yilwatda’s selection reflects the party’s desire for a technocratic, democratic-minded leader—rather than a traditional career politician—to steer its future.

Who Is Nentawe Yilwatda?

Born on August 8, 1968, in Dungung, Kanke LGA of Plateau State, Nentawe Yilwatda comes from a devout Christian family. He earned a degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering from the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, followed by a master’s from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University and a PhD in Digital Systems Engineering from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

Yilwatda previously served as Resident Electoral Commissioner in Benue State from 2017 to 2021. He left the role to contest the 2022 APC governorship primary in Plateau, eventually emerging as the party’s candidate but losing in the general election.

His career spans academia, consulting for international development agencies, and heading ICT at the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi.

His Rise to Minister and Close Ties to Lalong

Yilwatda’s appointment as minister followed the resignation of his political mentor, Simon Lalong, who stepped down to reclaim his Senate seat after a court ruling reversed the PDP’s victory in Plateau South.

During the 2023 elections, Yilwatda served as the Plateau State Coordinator for the Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign, cementing his position within APC’s inner circle.

Chairmanship Race: Al-Makura as a Backup Option

While Yilwatda leads the race, former Nasarawa governor, Senator Tanko Al-Makura, remains a possible alternative should internal party negotiations stall. Sources within APC confirmed that both names are under serious consideration by the party leadership and governors.

The chairmanship, originally zoned to the North Central region, temporarily shifted to the North West with Ganduje’s controversial appointment. His exit, sources say, was partially due to pushback from North Central stakeholders.

Party insiders believe returning the chairmanship to the North Central—possibly to a Christian leader—would promote regional and religious balance, especially amid ongoing criticism of the Tinubu-Shettima Muslim-Muslim ticket.

NEC Meeting Will Decide APC’s Future

The final decision is expected at today’s APC National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting. While momentum is with Yilwatda, some interest blocs are still pushing for consensus, which could result in Al-Makura’s emergence.

Whatever the outcome, party leaders hope the new chairman will help reunite internal factions, uphold zoning principles, and restore party harmony ahead of the 2027 general elections.
