The newly appointed Aree of Iree, Murtala Oyelakin, is alleged to have forcibly entered the king’s seclusion shrine by breaking its door during a raid on Odofin’s compound in Iree, Osun State. According to reports from DailyPost, this act took place on Friday as part of an attempt to gain access for traditional rites.
Accompanied by a group of hoodlums, suspected criminals, and unidentified outsider hunters, Prince Oyelakin and his associates reportedly shot into the air during the invasion before hastily fleeing without performing any rituals.
Prince Oyelakin’s recognition as the new monarch by the State Executive Council, acting on behalf of the State Government, occurred after the withdrawal of a lawsuit by the town’s warrant chiefs. The vacancy of the Aree throne arose following the release of a State Government White Paper in January, which nullified the appointment made by former governor Adegboyega Oyetola in 2022.
Despite a prolonged strike by the state’s judiciary employees preventing the withdrawal of the lawsuit, a few kingmakers chosen by the state government proceeded with the selection process. The State Executive Council, chaired by Governor Adeleke, later approved the selection.
Customarily, a new Aree is required to spend three days in seclusion (Ipebi) within Odofin’s compound before entering the palace. However, it is rumored that Prince Oyelakin, the contentious monarch, is the first Aree not to undergo seclusion at Odofin’s compound.
It has been revealed that the new monarch abandoned the rites after traditional leaders responsible for the process refused to participate, arguing that the same had already been performed for Oba Raphael Ademola Oluponnle. They asserted that repeating the process for Oyelakin would be sacrilegious and manipulative.
The chiefs, Asalu, Odofin, and Oluode, declared that until Oba Oluponnle reaches maturity and joins his forebears, the objects used in such traditional rites would not be retrieved and applied to anyone else.
Commenting on the situation, Bolanle Ojo, the head of the Odofin compound, stated, “It is practically impossible for us to accept another person into seclusion. Everything necessary traditionally was done and handed over to Oba Oluponnle, and we can’t retrieve it.”
High Chief Taiwo Mariana, the Asalu of Iree, emphasized, “We conducted the necessary rites for Oba Oluponnle, and it cannot be done twice; the government should please tread with caution by not using the Obaship matter to create confusion in Iree.
