Unpaid Allowances: NECO Examiners Set To Stage ProtestExaminers hired by the National Examinations Council (NECO) to grade the 2024 students’ examination papers have threatened to stage a nationwide protest over unpaid allowances for their work. A letter sent to the NECO Chief Registrar in Minna, written by aggrieved examiners from Kano and circulated among their counterparts in Plateau State, confirms the situation. The letter, dated November 8, 2024, was also copied to team leaders and assistant examiners nationwide, and was obtained by our correspondent in Jos on Sunday.

The letter expressed frustration over the delayed payments, stating: “It is very appalling that despite the exams having been marked over three months ago and results released over a month ago, most of the examiners have yet to be paid for their work. Only a few have received their payments nationwide.”

The examiners, who emphasized their vital role in ensuring the smooth conduct and evaluation of the exams, described the delay as “utterly unacceptable.” They added, “Our dedication and commitment should not be met with such negligence, especially during these difficult economic times.”

The letter further stated that the examiners were giving NECO a two-week ultimatum to address the issue. Failure to resolve the matter within this period, they warned, would result in a nationwide protest across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The letter concluded by threatening legal action if the issue remained unresolved, saying: “We trust that NECO will take immediate action to settle the payments, or we will pursue legal action against the organization for neglect and disregard for our rights.”

Several NECO examiners interviewed in Jos expressed their readiness to participate in the protest if their demands were not met. Attempts to contact NECO’s Registrar and CEO, Prof. Dantani Wushishi, for comment were unsuccessful, as his phone was switched off at the time of the inquiry.
