President Bola Ahmed Tinubu officially inaugurated the High-Level African Counter-Terrorism conference on Monday, marking the commencement of discussions aimed at addressing terrorism challenges across the continent. The event, hosted at the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) in Abuja, underscores Nigeria’s commitment to spearheading efforts to combat terrorism with the support of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT).
As outlined in a statement released by the presidency, Nigeria, in collaboration with UNOCT, has convened this summit under the theme, ‘Strengthening Regional Cooperation and Institution Building to Address the Evolving Threat of Terrorism.’ Scheduled from April 22 to April 23, the summit aims to bolster multilateral cooperation in counter-terrorism efforts while advocating for African-led solutions to combat terrorism effectively.
The summit serves as a pivotal platform for stakeholders to assess the gravity of terrorism’s impact on the continent and to devise strategic priorities and actionable measures to mitigate this menace. It emphasizes the imperative of regional collaboration, capacity-building initiatives, and the exchange of best practices to confront the diverse and complex nature of terrorism in Africa.
Distinguished attendees at the summit include Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism, Vladimir Voronkov, and Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ms. Amina Mohammed. Additionally, notable leaders such as President Patrice Talon of Benin, President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana, and President Faure Gnassingbe of Togo are among the dignitaries participating in this crucial security discourse.
Accompanying them are Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, H.E. Yusuf Tugga, Mauritius Minister of National Defence, General Hanana Hanana, and Moussa Faki Mahmat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, underscoring the broad-based commitment to addressing terrorism on the continent.
The conference aims to facilitate robust discussions and initiatives to enhance the collective response to terrorism, ultimately fostering peace, security, and stability across Africa.
