The National Bureau of Statistics has confirmed that there was widespread vote-buying during Nigeria’s 2023 general elections. The report, released on July 11, reveals that 22% of Nigerians were personally offered money in exchange for their votes in the 2023 elections, while 9% were offered other favors. This marks a significant rise from 2019, where 17% were offered money and 4% other favors.

Furthermore, the NBS highlighted that 10% of respondents in 2023 reported that someone in their household was approached for a vote-buying transaction, up from 5% in 2019.

Despite the prevalence of vote-buying, the report indicates that 55% of those offered money or favors claimed that it did not influence their voting decisions. However, 40% admitted to voting for the party or individual who offered them inducements.

The survey also noted a similar increase in vote-buying across gender, urban and rural areas, and age groups between 2019 and 2023, with the North-West region recording a significant rise from 23% to 44%.

In response to the findings, civic engagement group Yiaga Africa emphasized that vote-buying continues to pose a threat to Nigeria’s democracy.
