Why Should I Betray Kwankwaso?” — Old Video Of Gov Yusuf Sparks Kano Buzz
Amid rising political tension in Kano State over reports that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf may defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), an old video of the governor reaffirming his loyalty to his political mentor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has resurfaced and gone viral.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The footage, believed to have been recorded in July 2024, has attracted renewed attention as speculation grows that Yusuf could leave the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) for the APC later this month.
In the video, filmed during a late-night engagement with journalists at the Kano Government House, Yusuf dismissed claims of a fallout between himself and Kwankwaso, describing such reports as divisive and disrespectful.
Reacting at the time to the emergence of the “Abba Tsaya da Kafarka” movement — loosely translated as “Abba, stand on your own feet” — Yusuf said the slogan was an insult to his leadership and an attempt to undermine his administration’s achievements.
He emphasised that loyalty remains a core political value for him and the people of Kano, crediting Kwankwaso’s support for his emergence as governor.
“God gave me the opportunity to become governor, but Kwankwaso’s backing made it possible. Why should I betray him?” Yusuf asked in the video.
The governor accused proponents of the movement of deliberately trying to sow discord, stressing that his priority remained governance and service to the people.
“I have always been loyal,” he added.
In the same footage, Yusuf also denied reports that he had been ignoring calls from Kwankwaso, explaining that he chose not to pursue legal action against the media outlet that published the claim out of respect for the journalism profession.
“I could have taken action against the journalist who wrote the story, but I didn’t because I respect this profession and want to work with the media, not against it,” he said.
The resurfacing of the video comes as the governor has remained silent on the defection rumours, a development that has further fueled political speculation in Kano State.
Meanwhile, Kwankwaso, leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, has openly opposed any move by Yusuf to defect to the APC.
Speaking on Saturday at his residence in Kano, the former governor warned against such a decision, saying that continued pursuit of defection could lead to harsh public judgment.
“If they continue on this path, there will come a time when people will say Ganduje’s betrayal was even better, despite how rotten he is,” Kwankwaso said, referring to Governor Yusuf and supporters pushing for a possible defection.
