Your Govt Wrecked Our Health Sector – NMA Slams Femi Adesina Over Buhari-Era Boast

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has sharply criticized former presidential spokesperson Femi Adesina, calling his recent remarks on the state of the Nigerian healthcare system an outright “insult to Nigerians.”....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Adesina, in a recent television interview, suggested that late former President Muhammadu Buhari might not have survived as long as he did had he relied on Nigerian hospitals, citing lack of necessary equipment and expertise for his treatment — hence the decision to seek care in London.

In response, Dr. Diamond Tamunokuro, Chairman of the NMA Rivers State chapter, condemned the comments in an interview with DAILY POST, describing them as disrespectful to millions of Nigerians who depend on the same local health institutions daily for basic and specialized care.

Tamunokuro argued that Adesina’s remarks expose the failures of the administration he served in — especially regarding the neglect of the health sector.

“It’s deeply insulting for any public official to ridicule the healthcare system so many Nigerians rely on — a system that still manages to save lives despite limited resources,” he said.

He noted that countless Nigerians have received life-saving treatments in local hospitals and have lived longer, healthier lives — a fact Adesina’s statement seemed to dismiss.

“By making such a statement, Mr. Adesina essentially admits that the government he represented did not invest adequately in the sector. It’s a shameful reflection of their priorities,” Tamunokuro added.

He urged citizens to begin questioning the true intentions of politicians and hold them accountable for their stewardship in governance, especially in sectors as vital as health.

“Nigerians must ask: Do our leaders care about us, or are they only in power to enrich themselves?”

Tamunokuro also stressed that Nigerian doctors are working tirelessly — often under difficult conditions — to provide quality care and improve the health sector. He urged the government to support this dedication by investing in healthcare infrastructure rather than sending politicians abroad for treatment.

“Doctors across Nigeria, especially in Rivers State, are making huge sacrifices to strengthen our healthcare system,” he said.
“Rather than fleeing abroad for medical treatment, political leaders should focus on fixing our hospitals and equipping them to meet international standards.”

He emphasized the need for public discourse on the state of the nation’s health sector and urged voters to press politicians for clear, actionable health policies.
